South Somerset District Council has long been aware of the importance of open space to the quality of life of its residents and visitors. Over recent years the council has sought to develop this Strategy to ensure that sufficient open space of the right quality and type is provided in the right locations.

 

We now also recognise the need for a considered and robust approach to nature conservation across the district. As we prepare the next iteration of the Open Spaces Strategy, we will be reinforcing the approach to nature conservation and the environment. At early consultation sessions for this updated Strategy, it is clear that our residents want to be reassured that this is a high level priority, whether on our own land or that of others.
